Continue reading to learn how ketamine therapy works and what to expect throughout the treatment process.
Ketamine Therapy is an evidence-based, clinically supervised treatment designed to help individuals experiencing extreme depression, anxiety, PTSD, and other mood disorders. First used in the 1970s as anesthesia, ketamine was discovered 20 years later to have profound antidepressant effects.
While common antidepressants, such as SSRIs focus on regulating the neurotransmitter serotonin, ketamine acts on the NMDA receptors and increases glutamate, the brain’s most powerful chemical messenger. Ketamine can help restore vital neural connections and pathways in regions of the brain impaired by depression. As a result, there are positive changes in brain circuit function and mood regulation.
At ENLIFE Mind + Body, ketamine therapy is delivered in a safe, supportive, and medically guided environment, via a low dose intravenous infusion over 40-60 minutes. Effects of the medication are felt within a few minutes which may include relaxation, a light or warm sensation, and experiencing a dissociation or separation between the patient and their thoughts, feelings, and perceptions. Patients generally tolerate these sensations well and effects wear off over 10-15 minutes post infusion.
While the effects of ketamine are felt during the infusion, the therapeutic benefits often unfold over time. Ketamine therapy is a process, not a one-time event. While some patients notice meaningful improvements early in treatment, lasting change typically occurs through a series of treatments that support the brain's ability to form new neural pathways. Following your recommended treatment plan allows these changes to build over time, creating a stronger foundation for long-term healing and resilience.
Progress Often Happens Gradually
Every healing journey is unique. Some individuals notice meaningful improvements shortly after beginning treatment, while for others, progress unfolds more gradually over time. Many patients describe ketamine therapy as less like flipping a switch and more like slowly brightening a room – subtle shifts that build into meaningful, lasting change.
You may begin to notice:
-
Greater emotional resilience
-
Improved ability to manage stress
-
Increased motivation and engagement
-
More mental clarity and perspective
-
Improved response to other therapies and treatments
The insights gained during treatment are only part of the healing process. The real opportunity for growth comes from how those insights are understood, integrated, and applied in everyday life. That's why every treatment at ENLIFE Mind + Body is supported by a personalized care approach designed to help patients create meaningful, lasting change.
We believe ketamine therapy is most effective when paired with Integration Coaching. Ketamine can create meaningful shifts in perspective, emotional awareness, and mental clarity, while Integration Coaching helps transform those insights into sustainable growth, healthier patterns, and lasting change.
Supporting Long-Term Success
We encourage patients to actively participate in their healing journey by:
-
Attending follow-up appointments
-
Engaging in therapy or coaching
-
Practicing mindfulness and self-care
-
Staying physically active
-
Maintaining healthy sleep habits
-
Tracking mood, symptoms, or progress
-
Spending time with supportive friends and family
These healthy habits help reinforce the progress made during treatment and create a strong foundation for long-term wellness. Small, consistent actions often lead to the most meaningful and lasting results.
It's also important to remember that healing is rarely a straight line. Expect ups and downs along the way. It is normal to have good days and more challenging days throughout treatment. Some patients may even experience temporary emotional or physical fluctuations before noticing meaningful improvement.
Trust the process, stay connected with your care team, and continue utilizing the healthy coping tools and support systems that work for you. Lasting transformation doesn't happen in a single session, it happens through intentional care, ongoing support, and a commitment to your well-being. When you're ready to invest in your long-term health, we're here to guide you every step of the way.
Preparing for Ketamine Therapy: Tips for Success
Your mindset, environment, and preparation can play an important role in your ketamine therapy experience. These simple recommendations can help you feel more comfortable, supported, and ready for treatment.
Before Your Session
1. Create a Positive Mental Space
The day before and the day of your treatment, try to minimize exposure to unnecessary stress, conflict, or emotionally draining situations. Avoid upsetting news, stressful conversations, or intense movies and television shows when possible.
2. Stay Hydrated & Nourished
Drink plenty of water the day before your appointment and up to 2 hours prior to your treatment. Focus on healthy nutrition; avoid eating solid food 4 hours prior to treatment. You must abstain from the use of alcohol, marijuana, and non-prescribed sedatives before treatment unless otherwise directed by your provider.
Note: If you are taking any of the following medications, you must hold off from taking them on the day of your treatment:
-
Stimulants that can increase your blood pressure and heart rate
-
Benzodiazepines such as Xanax, Klonopin or Ativan
-
Lamictal (Lamotrigine)
-
MAOIs
3. Set an Intention
Many patients find it helpful to reflect on what they hope to gain from treatment. This does not need to be complicated, a simple intention such as "finding peace," "healing," or "being open to change" can help guide the experience.
4. Arrange Supportive Transportation
Because you will not be able to drive after treatment, you'll need a trusted driver to bring you to and from your appointment. Supportive, positive companionship can make a meaningful difference in your experience.
Note: We recommend arriving at least 20 minutes before your infusion and planning to remain 1-2 hour post infusion for monitoring and recovery.
